This movie is an absolute classic. Vincent Price plays the "last man on earth" who spends his days trying to survive in a world full of vampire-zombie-things. With a great twist at the end.
Highly recommended.

Good Movie. Certainly on a par with The Omega Man (perhaps better) which is incorrectly considered the first film version of the novel "I am Legend". Not only does this movie predate Hestons film it is also much closer to the source material. Of course the most famous film to be (very) loosely based on that story is also on this site - Night of the Living Dead. Hollywood is currently producing a new version which is apparently following the book closely, but how good it turns out one thing is for sure, the lead actor probably wont do as well in the role as Vincent Price does in this (Again, much better then Heston). In this, Price really brings out the emotional side of the character showing his lonliness and despair.

Richard Matheson rules. His book "I Am Legend" rules. It inspired Romero to make the modern-day viral zombie, for Pete's sake. Vincent Price does a great job as the tormented titular character, who spends his days finding supplies & staking vamps and his nights boarded up from the dead who hunt and haunt him.
Hollywood scrapped a '90s version with Schwarzenegger as the lead (whew! that was close!). Will Smith is playing the lead in the new one. Whatever.
Watch this instead.

A very interesting movie. I can't say for sure why it captivated me. But I will try. For one, I didn't realize Price the spook-meister could play such a sympathetic character. Secondly, it is a decent story. Thirdly, it is well told. Very much worth watching.

Much better than simple zombie stuff.
This is classic Sci-fi.
While obviously low-budget, they did a very good job of telling the story.
Acting is fair to good.

The movie may very well be a classic, but the version available for download is subpar: a 1.33:1 pan-and-scan version of a 2.35:1 widescreen movie (just look at how thin Vincent Price gets while the credits are on!).
This movie was made during the first few years of cinemascope film production, when filmmakers were trying to lure people out of their homes and into movie theaters by giving them not just a bigger but also a WIDER picture than they could get at home. Movies like this *gloried* in that wider presentation--downright *flaunted* it, in fact, taking every opportunity to show sweeping panoramas. It's a pity to see the sweeping, panoramic views of desolation that open the film chopped off into a little TV-sized box!
Happily, there's a DVD out there which offers both this and Ray Milland's "Panic in Year Zero" on a single DVD in anamorphic widescreen, preserving the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. And at the moment it's in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart. Go find it. Experience this movie the way it was meant to be seen.
